Frequently Asked Questions

How many grammar schools are there in Northern Ireland?

There are 63 grammar schools in Northern Ireland that use the SEAG transfer test as part of their Year 8 admissions criteria. This includes 38 co-educational schools, 10 boys' schools and 15 girls' schools.

Do all grammar schools use the SEAG test?

Yes. Since 2023, all grammar schools in Northern Ireland that use academic selection are members of SEAG and use the same single entrance assessment. The old AQE/GL split no longer applies.

What score does my child need to get into a grammar school?

Each school sets its own admissions criteria. Most grammar schools give priority to pupils in the higher SEAG bands (Band 1 and Band 2), but the exact threshold varies by school and year depending on the number of applicants. Check each school's published admissions criteria for the most up-to-date information.

Can my child apply to more than one grammar school?

Yes. Your child sits the SEAG test once and the result is shared with every school you list on the transfer form. You can list up to three grammar schools in order of preference.
